Helen Fredericka Fetzer Abney, 93 , of Springfield died at 6:00 pm, Wednesday, July 2, 2008 at St. Joseph’s Home. She was born March 31, 1915 near Pleasant Plains, Illinois, the daughter of Edward J. F. and Louise (Hagen) Fetzer.

Mrs. Abney is survived by her husband, two sons, William Wayne (Leslie) Abney, Makanda, IL and Robert Hamilton (Demetra) Abney of Woodstock, IL; three grandsons, Jonathan Abney, Benjamin Abney, and Drew Abney; brother, Edward J. F. (Connie) Fetzer, Jr., Bloomington IL; niece Joan Taylor Sanders, Springfield, IL; nephew E. Ronald (Marcia) Fetzer, Bloomington IL, and niece Carole Fetzer (Charles) Bolatto , Marseilles IL. She was preceded in death by her parents, and sister, Elouise (Joseph) Taylor.

She graduated from Springfield High School in 1937 and then graduated from Illinois State Normal University, Normal IL. She attended two summers at the University of Colorado, Boulder CO. She had been a member of Delta Kappa Gamma and music supervisor of Sangamon County Schools. With the approval of the Board of Supervisors and the Superintendent in Springfield she carried forward a program of teaching music over the radio.

After she lost her first husband when his ship was torpedoed by a Nazi submarine, she joined the American Red Cross. As World War II was beginning to wind down, she married Arthur Gene Abney, a Navy pilot, in Corpus Christi, Texas on November 9, 1945. She was a member of St. John’s Lutheran Church, Springfield IL.

Staab Funeral Home, 1109 South 5th Street, Springfield, IL 62703 is in charge of arrangements. Visitation will be Saturday July 5, 2008 from 9:30-10:30 am at Staab Funeral Home
The Funeral service will be 10:30 am, Saturday, July 5, 2008 at Staab Funeral Home.
Memorials may be directed to St. John’s Lutheran Church, 2477 West Washington St., Springfield IL 62702 or to the American Red Cross, Illinois Capital Area Chapter, 1045 Outer Park Dr. #1, Springfield IL 62704.
Burial will be in Oak Ridge Cemetery.
