Harvey E. Garecht, Sr., 78, of Edinburg died Saturday, April 16, 2016 at 8:32 pm at his home surrounded by family. He was born July 27, 1937 in Springfield to William J. and Mary J. (Schneider) Garecht. He married his wife Gena in June of 1990. He was preceded in death by his parents; sister, Arlene Black-Smarjesse; and two brothers, William C. Garecht and Kirk D. Garecht.
Survivors include his wife Gena; three daughters, Kim (John) Smith of Divernon, Karen (Bruce) Harmening of Athens, and Kitty (Don) Donath of Springfield; two sons, Harvey (Carole) Garecht Jr. of Williamsville and Andy (Tricia) Garecht of Springfield; 18 grandchildren; 33 great-grandchildren; two brothers, John Garecht of Collinsville and Mike Garecht of Denver, CO; and several nieces, nephews, and cousins.
Harvey was the former owner of Collision Craft Auto Body, Pier 55, and Springfield Truck Testing. He was a land developer and also owned standard bred race horses. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, woodworking, horse racing golfing, and was an avid Illini fan. Harvey was a former member of the Anchor Boat Club. He was a member of the Knights of Columbus, the Varmint Hunters 500 Yard Club, NRA, Edinburg Lions Club, North American Hunting Club, and the United States Trotting Association. He was also a former altar boy at Sacred Heart Church.
Visitation: 4-7 pm Wednesday, April 20, 2016 at Staab Funeral Home.
Funeral Service: 11 am Thursday, April 21, 2016 at Staab Funeral Home with Reverend Chris House officiating. Burial will follow at Roselawn Memorial Park.
