SPRINGFIELD – Harry George Schake Sr., 87, of Springfield, formerly of St. Louis, died at 12:10 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 8, 2009, at St. John’s Hospice.
He was born April 12, 1922, in Granite City, the son of Harry William and Alma Stoecklin Schake. He married Jane Cradick on June 15, 1946, in St. Louis.
He was preceded in death by an infant son; his parents; step-father, Frank Luecht; and a granddaughter, Kelly Keane.
He is survived by his wife of 63 years, Jane Schake of Springfield; four children, Harry Hank (Marilyn) Schake Jr., Kathleen Keane and Stephen Schake, all of the St. Louis area, and Mary Jane (Jeff) Boyer of Springfield; seven grandchildren, Christopher (Melissa) Schake, Katy (Clinton) Hague, Murray Schake, Olivia Schake, Patrick Boyer, Daniel Schake and Alison Boyer; three great-granddaughters, Caroline and Eleanor Schake and Delaney Hague; and many nieces and nephews.
Harry was a resident of Springfield for 38 years. He worked for Falstaff Brewing Corp. for 23 years, Starr Brothers Distributing for 6 years, and retired from the state of Illinois Children and Family Services in 1996.
Harry served in the U.S. Navy Air Corps serving in World War II. He was a fan of all St. Louis sports teams and the Indiana Hoosiers.
Visitation will be held from 4 to 7 p.m. Friday, Nov. 13, 2009, at Staab Funeral Home. Private
funeral services will be held. Burial will be at Valhalla Cemetery in St. Louis.
