SPRINGFIELD – Gladys M. Hughes, 85, of Springfield, formerly of Gillespie, died at 1:05 a.m. Friday, July 31, 2009, at St. John’s Hospital.
She was born Dec. 16, 1923, in Hannibal, Mo., the daughter of Charles Charlie and Bessie Scott Clark. She married Andrew M. Hughes on May 12, 1940; he preceded her in death on March 27, 2004.
She was also preceded in death by her parents; a son, Charles Walter Hughes; and a brother, Billy Clark.
She is survived by a son, Lonnie M. (Deborah) Hughes Sr. of Springfield; a daughter-in-law, Jane Hughes of Springfield; four grandchildren, Marty Hughes, Christine (Darin) Anderson, Lonnie Hughes Jr., and Jason (Nicole) Hughes; six great-grandchildren, Aubrey, Kelsie, Andrew, Lonnie III, Savannah, and Abigail; a sister, Goldie (Eddie) Eckhoff of Mount Olive; a brother, Leroy (Barb) Clark of Litchfield; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.
Gladys was a resident of Springfield for over 30 years. She retired as an aide for the Mary Bryant Home for the Blind and was a homemaker. She was a member of World Harvest Church.
Graveside services will be held at 11 a.m. Monday, Aug. 3, 2009, at Camp Butler National Cemetery, with the Rev. Greg Roe officiating.
Burial will be at Camp Butler National Cemetery.
