George Stieren, 85, of Springfield died at 4:22 pm, Tuesday, December 15, 2010, at St. John’s Hospital. He was born May 20, 1925, in Springfield, the son of George and Margaret O’Leary Stieren. George married Maria de la Paz Hernandez on October 30, 1954. She preceded him in death on July 25, 1988. He was also preceded in death by his parents and two sisters, Mary Merkle and Virginia Smith.
He is survived by three daughters, Patricia Patty (Paul) Redlin of New York State, Rose Marie Rosie (Larry) Johnson of Aurora, and Melanie (Doug) Chancellor of California; three sons, John Stieren of Texas, Jim Stieren of Oregon, and George Stieren of California; nine grandchildren; three sisters, Betty Rick of Florida, Margaret Herr and Dorothy Hollis, both of Springfield and several aunts, nieces, nephews and cousins.
George, a resident of Springfield all of his life, was a member of St. Joseph’s Church and Mensa. He was a member of the United States Navy, serving during WWII in the South Pacific. Mr. Stieren was an accountant for the Illinois Department of Revenue.
Visitation: 4-7 pm, Monday, December 20, 2010 at Staab Funeral Home, with a prayer service at 4 pm.
Funeral Mass: 9:30 am, Tuesday, December 21, 2010, St. Joseph’s Church,
with Monsignor Thomas Holinga officiating. Burial will be at Camp Butler National Cemetery, where military honors will be conducted.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to The American Diabetes Association.
