SPRINGFIELD – George O’Brien Smith, a retired teacher and school administrator in the Beardstown School District, died at his home in Springfield on Friday, January 29, 2010.
A native of Ontonagon, Michigan, Mr. Smith was born to Mrs. Catherine O’Brien in 1927.
He graduated from Ferris State University in Michigan and Colorado State University, Fort Collins, Colorado. Mr. Smith was a veteran of the U.S. Army serving duty in Japan from 1946-1948 and 1950-1951 during the Korean War. He was a member of the Knights of Columbus, Dana Thomas House Foundation, Bloomington American Legion and Lincoln Tomb Association.
Survivors are his sister, Betty (Jim) Ferguson; 1 niece, Laura (Tim) Astapchuh; 1 nephew, Jim (Sharon) Ferguson; 1 great-niece, Sabrina Astapchuh; 3 great-nephews, Spencer Blake and Matthew and Nathan Ferguson; and friends, Rod and Pam Thompson and Mary Ann Langston.
Staab Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements. A gathering will be held from 9-10 a.m. on Friday, February 12, 2010, at Staab Funeral Home. A memorial service will follow at 10 a.m. with Deacon Tom Burns conducting services. Burial will be at Camp Butler National Cemetery, where military honors will be conducted by the Sangamon County Interveterans Burial Detail.
Memorials may be given to Shriner’s Children Hospital.
