ROCKFORD – Gene E. Yost, 88, of Rockford, formerly of Springfield, died at 3:40 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 20, 2009, at Crimson Pointe Care Center in Rockford.
He was born Dec. 6, 1920, in Alton, to Benjamin and Mabel Buchanan Yost. He married Lucile A. DeWall on Jan. 19, 1947. She preceded him in death on Oct. 16, 2004. He also was preceded in death by his parents; and a sister, Mary.
Mr. Yost is survived by a daughter, Nancy J. Yost of Machesney Park; and several nieces and nephews, including Sharen (husband, Mike) Nichols of Texas.
Gene was a U.S. Navy veteran, serving during World War II. He was a member of St. John’s Lutheran Church, Painters Local 90, Blue Ridge Club, Elks Lodge and Eagles Club, all in Springfield. He also was an avid Cardinals fan and attended spring training for 20 years. He also enjoyed singing karaoke.
Visitation will be held from 4 to 7 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 22, 2009, at Staab Funeral Home. A funeral service will be held at the funeral home at 9 a.m. Friday, Jan. 23, 2009, with Chaplin Carol Harrington officiating. Interment will follow at Camp Butler National Cemetery, where military honors will be provided by the Sangamon County Interveterans Burial Detail.
