PETERSBURG – Gary L. Guernsey, 70, of Petersburg died at 8:48 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 27, 2009, at Memorial Medical Center.
He was born Dec. 28, 1938, in Mechanicsburg, the son of Clarence Lincoln and Erma Beecraft Guernsey.
He was preceded in death by his parents and one sister, Dorothy J. Smith.
He is survived by two daughters, Kathryn Guernsey of Lakewood, CA, and Camille R. (fiance: Michael L. Bradley, Jr.) Guernsey of Riverton; one son, Shane E. Guernsey of Springfield; two grandchildren, Sara Guernsey and Whitney Day; two sisters, Doris (Roger) Cullers of Petersburg and Dana Harbour of Springfield; four brothers, Phillip (Nancy) Guernsey of Pleasant Plains, Kenneth (MaryLou), Dennis (Judy) and Dale Guernsey all of Springfield; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.
He worked for CILCO where he started in the Gas Department and retired as a lineman on April 1, 2001, after 36 years of service.
A resident of Petersburg most of his life, he was a member of St. Peters Catholic Church in Petersburg, 32rd Degree Scottish Rite Valley of Springfield, member and past master of Clinton Lodge 19 AF&AM, ANSAR Shrine, lifetime member of American Legion in Petersburg and DAV in Springfield, and a US Air Force Veteran serving for 8 years working on aircraft engines. He was a one time Champion at Shambolee Golf Course and was a past volunteer fireman in Petersburg.
Visitation will be held from 4-7 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 3, 2010, at Staab Funeral Home with a Masonic Service at 6:45 p.m. Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Monday, Jan. 4, 2010 at Staab Funeral Home, with the Rev. Anthony Pilli officiating. Burial will be at Camp Butler National Cemetery, where Sangamon County Interveterans Burial Detail will conduct military honors.
Memorials may be made to Shriner’s Children’s Hospital.
