Gene Berthold, 84, of Springfield, Illinois died on Wednesday, June 29, 2011 at Lewis Memorial Christian Village. He was born December 22, 1926 in Dieterich, IL to Lewis and Iva J. Haynes Berthold. He married Jean A. Bordonaro on September 20, 1952 and she survives.
Surviving are three children, Paul (Connie) Berthold, Jane (Thomas) Townsend and Denise Casson; six grandchildren: Laura, Daniel (Cari), Sarah, Ryan, Michael and Troy; three great grandchildren, Matthew, Makayla and Aubriana.
Gene was preceded in death by his father, Louis Berthold and Mother, Iva Fyke and son-in-law, Jack Casson.
He was a member of Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception, VFW, a Grand Knight with the Knights of Columbus, and a former Boy Scouts troop leader. He was a WWII Army veteran. He worked for Pillsbury Mills, St. John’s Hospital and retired from the State of Illinois Telecommunication Division. After retiring he enjoyed working as a Tour Guide and caretaker at the Washington Park Carillon. He loved to travel and was a snow bird for many years. Gene enjoyed making new friends and didn’t know a stranger. His favorite saying was “God Bless You”.
Memorial Gathering: 10-11 am, Tuesday, July 5, 2011 at Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception.
Memorial Mass: 11 am, Tuesday, July 5, 2011 at Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception with Reverend Peter Harman officiating. Burial will be at Camp Butler National Cemetery where the Sangamon County Interveterans Burial Detail will conduct Military Honors.
The family requests memorial contributions may be made to the Chaddock Boy School, Quincy Illinois or for Gene’s WWII Memorial brick in Washington. DC.
