Gilbert Dean McQueen, 83, of New Berlin passed away Wednesday, December 19, 2012 at his home with his family at his side. Dean was born in rural Morgan County on January 30, 1929 to G.L. McQueen and H. Fay McNeely McQueen whom both preceded him in death.
He married Margaret Ann Garde on May 2, 1953. She preceded him in death in 1996. Dean later married Diana Peters Dzierwa McQueen on August 7, 1999.
Also preceding him in death is one grandson, Adam McQueen Rose in 2001 and an infant sister.
Mr. McQueen served in the U.S. Army as a medic in Germany during the Korean Conflict. Dean returned to his family farm in Alexander and later New Berlin where he later retired.
He participated in the annual Memorial Day celebration with the American Legion Post # 743 in New Berlin.
Dean was a proud member of the American Legion Post #743, the Elks Club, Farm Bureau, National Rifle Association and the North American Hunting Club. Pastimes included hunting and in his later years, he enjoyed reading and dining out with friends.
Dean is survived by his wife, Diana; three daughters, Deann (Chuck) Rose of Springfield, Mary (Kevin) Bilyeu of Curran, and Celeste (Tom) Steele of Greenview; one son, Andrew (Lisa) McQueen of New Berlin; three step-children, Mary Ann (Ed) Domaracki of South Elgin, Joann (Paul) Bergschneider, and Luke (Courtney) Dzierwa both of New Berlin; fifteen grandchildren, Heath Bilyeu, Faye (Steven Costello) Bilyeu, Stephanie Steele, Jordan McQueen, Nathan Rose, Stephen McQueen, Joe McQueen, Alyssa, Krista, and Charlie Domaracki, Taylor and Pierce Bergschneider and Bailey, Allison and Lucas Dzierwa; one great grandson Hunter Neuman; one younger brother, Norman (Mary Jo) McQueen of Jacksonville and several nieces, nephews and cousins.
Visitation: 2-5 pm, Sunday, December 23, 2012 at Berlin Christian Church.
Lie in State:: 9:30 – 10:00 am, Monday, December 24, 2012 at Berlin Christian Church.
Funeral Service: 10 am, Monday, December 24, 2012 at Berlin Christian Church with Pastor Warren Brosi officiating.
Burial will be in St. Mary’s Cemetery where Sangamon County Interveterans Burial Detail will conduct Military Honors.
Memorials may be made to the Berlin Christian Church, the New Berlin area Veterans Memorial Association or Memorial Home Hosipice.
