SPRINGFIELD – Frederick L. Freddy Groves, 61, a resident of Springfield since 1963, died at 1:00 p.m. Sunday, April 11, 2010, at Memorial Medical Center.
He was born March 27, 1949, in Brooklyn, NY, the son of Robert and Phyllis Corelli Groves. He married Carol A. May on Feb. 6, 1976.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
Mr. Groves worked as a foreman at CWLP Water Department, retiring on Feb. 1, 2010. He was a U.S. Navy veteran.
He was a member of St. Aloysius Church and president of AFSCME Local #337 for many years. His hobbies were fishing, hunting and gardening.
Surviving are his wife, Carol A. Groves of Springfield; two daughters, Tara Groves of Florida and Gina Groves of North Carolina; two grandchildren; two sisters, Denise Schantz of Sherman and Sharon (husband, Dave) Hemberger of Athens; three brothers, Robert (wife, Patricia) Groves of Arizona, Joseph Groves of North Carolina and William (wife, Teena) Groves of Springfield; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.
A memorial gathering will be held from 4-7 p.m. Thursday, April 15, 2010, at Staab Funeral Home. Memorial Mass will be at 10:00 a.m. Friday, April 16, 2010, at St. Aloysius Church, with the Reverend Mark Schulte officiating. Burial will be in Camp Butler National Cemetery, where military honors will be conducted.
Memorials may be made to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital.
