Franklin L. Hammitt, Jr., 67, of Springfield, died at 3:34 pm, Saturday, June 30, 2012. He was born December 25, 1944 in Springfield, to Franklin L. and Theresa Fleck Hammitt, Sr. He married Charlotte A. Cellini on June 14, 1973 and she preceded him in death on March 5, 2007. His father and one sister, Patricia Saurs-Hammitt preceded him in death.
Survivors include his Mother, Theresa Hammitt of Springfield; three sons, Franklin Hammitt, III, Jerry (Jamie) Stone and Thomas R. Stone all of Springfield; three grandchildren; three great grandchildren; five sisters, JoAnne (Thomas) Bartolomucci of Springfield, Barbara (Marty) Grosboll of Kingwood, TX, Mary Ross of Eagle, CO, Theresa (Bill Woods) Hammit of St. Louis, MO and Beverly (Mark) Hopkins of Springfield; one brother, Mike (Rosie) Hammitt of Pleasant Plains, IL; one aunt, Florence (Harold) Whymeyer of Mountain Home, AR; one uncle, Jim (Nancy) Fleck of TN and several nieces, nephews and cousins.
Franklin was a US Navy Veteran serving during the Vietnam War. He was a member of Firefighters Postal Lake Club. He was an avid NASCAR and Sprint car fan and formerly owed midget and sprint cars and enjoyed fishing.
When he was younger he helped his dad operate the Sinclair Gas Station at 5th and Mason streets. He was then employed as a fireman for the City of Springfield and later worked for the State of Illinois, Department of Central Management Services as a Regional Manager of State Garages.
Visitation: 4-7 pm, Thursday, July 5, 2012 at Staab Funeral Home.
Funeral Service: 10:00 am, Friday, July 6, 2012 at Staab Funeral Home with Reverend Fred Prince officiating. Burial will follow at Camp Butler National Cemetery where Sangamon County Interveterans Burial Detail will conduct military honors.
Memorial contributions may be made to St. John’s Hospice.
