SPRINGFIELD – Evelyn S. Winkie Nevins, 88, of Springfield died at 7:25 p.m. Sunday, April 19, 2009, at Memorial Medical Center.
She was born March 21, 1921, in Earle, Ark., the daughter of Robert and Mahalia Jackson Snow. She married Marion Nevins on Nov. 10, 1940, and he preceded her in death on Nov. 3, 1981. She was also preceded in death by her parents; a son, Dale; four sisters, Pansy Beam, Ann Collins, Marjorie Ryan and Lora Allon Boner; and two brothers, Robert Snow Jr. and Phillip Snow.
Mrs. Nevins was a resident of Springfield for most of her life. She retired from the Illinois Secretary of State Department of Driver Services as a supervisor. She graduated from Feitshans High School and was a member of Kumler United Methodist Church and a past member of Eagles Auxiliary Aerie 437. Evelyn loved playing the penny slots at the boats, was a former precinct committee woman and enjoyed reading.
Surviving are a daughter, Lora Nevins of Springfield; two sons, Roger (wife, Julie) Nevins of Ottawa and Gary Nevins of Springfield; a sister, Catherine Kitty Smysor of Springfield; 13 grandchildren; several great-grandchildren; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.
Visitation will be held from 9 a.m. until time of services at 11 a.m. Friday, April 24, 2009, at Staab Funeral Home with the Rev. Dr. John Hamilton officiating. Burial will be in Roselawn Memorial Park.
