SPRINGFIELD – Eugene G. Green, 84, of Springfield died at 7:01 am, Tuesday, March 10, 2009, at St. John’s Hospital.
He was born December 31, 1924 in Chicago, Illinois to George and Martha Danielczyk Green. He married Evelyn E. Purchla in 1946, she preceded him in death in 1980. He married Mildred Elliot in 1981 and she preceded him in death in 2004. He was also preceded in death by his parents; his only brother, George in January 2007; and a son James Green on December 18, 1995.
He is survived by his wife, Clara Wake Green, whom he married in 2006; one son, Mark K. (Mary) Green of Chatham; five grandchildren, Shannon, Allison, Kelli, Kristopher and James Green; one great-grandchild, Kaelyn Green; seven step-children, Lesta (James) Martin of Rocky Mountain, NC, Beverly (Doug Hardy) Catron of North Potomac, MD, Mary (David) Baker of Chatham, Elizabeth (Shad) Barker of Urbana, William (Lindsay) Wake of Tonganoxie, KS, Katherine (Rick) Dooley of Chicago and Karen (James) Schuman of Melbourne, Australia; 17 stepgrandchildren; three step-great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.
He was a WWII U.S. Army veteran serving in the European Theatre. He retired from Illinois Bell in 1981 after 35 years of service as a supervisor in the supplies division. He was a member of Christ the King Church, Telephone Pioneers of America and Lincoln Land Seniors Bowling League. During his lifetime he loved big band music and enjoyed ballroom dancing, bowling, playing canasta, pinochle and growing roses. Eugene was also an avid Cubs and Bears fan.
A memorial gathering will be held from 10-11 am, Saturday, March 14, 2009 at Christ the King Church with a memorial Mass at 11 am, Monsignor David Lantz officiating.
A private burial will be held at Calvary Cemetery at a later date.
Memorials may be made to the American Heart Association or Christ the King Church.
