Elmer C. Freimuth

SPRINGFIELD – Elmer C. Freimuth, age 92, of Springfield died at his home at 5:34 p.m. on Friday, May 15, 2009.

Mr. Freimuth was born on January 20, 1917, in Nashville, the son of William and Alvina Frederking Freimuth. He married Maxine M. DuBois on March 6, 1943; she preceded him in death on December 3, 2004.

Also preceding him in death were his parents and 7 sisters, Hulda (Henry) Roethemeyer, Louise (William) Markwardt, Freida (Edwin) Harre, Edna (Sidney) Hale, Emma Lichtenfels, Leona (Orval) Ragland, and Johanna (Alvin) Beek.

He was a resident of Springfield since 1947.

Elmer was a meat cutter for Krogers in Southern Illinois upon graduating from high school and after returning from the war. During WWII he served in the Medics, Infantry, Army Air Corps and QM Corps. He enlisted in the United States Army Reserves and retired in 1975 as LTC, after 32 years in the military. He was a procurement officer with the USPFO. He was later employed by the State Department of Military Affairs for over 16 years until retirement in 1991.

Survivors are 1 son, Richard Freimuth of Springfield; and several nieces, nephews; and many friends and neighbors.

He was member of Jerome United Methodist Church.

Visitation will be held from 11 a.m. until time of funeral services at 1 p.m. Tuesday, May 19, 2009, at Staab Funeral Home, with the Reverend Paul Black officiating. Burial will be in Camp Butler National Cemetery, where Sangamon County Interveterans Burial Detail will conduct military honors.

Memorials may be given to Jerome United Methodist Church or to a charity of the donor’s choice.
