SPRINGFIELD – Edward Joseph Gebhardt Jr., 83, of Springfield, IL passed away Wednesday April 21, 2010, at St. John’s Hospice.
He is survived by his loving wife, Eileen; daughter, Susan (Gerald) Johnson; son, Don (Leigh Ann) Gebhardt; 3 grandchildren, Todd E. (Trista) Johnson, Jessica and Alyssa Gebhardt; one brother, Robert (Rheta); one sister, Carol Ann (Donald) Moore; sister-in-law, Patricia Gebhardt; and several nieces and nephews.
Edward was born May 16, 1926, in St. Louis, MO the son of Edward Joseph and Catherine Wolfbauer Gebhardt Sr.
In June 1944 Ed was drafted into the armed services during WWII. He served in the 76th Infantry Division under General Patton and in the 389th Military Police Battalion. Edward returned to the U.S. and was discharged August 1946. On August 30, 1952 he married Eileen Kochman.
He worked at Sangamo Electric Company for 27 years, and he owned Ed Gebhardt Builders, constructing homes and apartment buildings. He enjoyed his grandchildren and family vacations.
He was preceded in death by his parents and 1 brother, Richard Gebhardt.
Visitation will be 4-7 p.m. Sunday, April 25, 2010, at Staab Funeral Home. He will lie in state from 10-10:30 a.m. Monday, April 26, 2010, at St. John’s Lutheran Church, until time of service at 10:30 a.m. with Reverend Paul Olson officiating. Burial will take place at Camp Butler National Cemetery, where Sangamon County Interveterans will conduct military honors.
