Edward J. Ashton, Sr., 75, of Hawthorn Woods, IL and formerly of Springfield, IL, died Thursday, September 22, 2016 at Journey Care Hospice in Barrington, IL.

Ed was born on June 30, 1941 in Springfield, IL, the son of Paul and Mary Louise Ashton. He was predeceased by his parents and his brother, Fred Ashton, of Springfield, IL. He is survived by his brother, Jim Ashton (wife, Patricia “Trish”) of Springfield, IL; his sister, Paulette Dumonceaux (husband, Gary) of Rochester, IL; his brother, Frank Ashton (wife Karol) of Springfield, IL; son, Edward J. Ashton, Jr. (Amy) of Mundelein, IL; daughter, Lisa Johnson (husband, Mike) of Springfield, IL; grandchildren, Hunter and Connor Ashton of Mundelein, IL and Alexandria and Evan Johnson of Springfield, IL; along with several cousins, nieces and nephews.

He was a member of St. Francis de Sales Catholic Parish in Lake Zurich.

Ed suffered from Multiple Sclerosis for over 30 years.

He attended Cathedral Grade School and was starter on the basketball team at Cathedral Boys High School, where he played basketball for 2 years and baseball for 4 years. He was also voted “All City Pitcher”. He completed 2 years at Springfield Junior College and obtained a Bachelor’s Degree from Illinois College-Jacksonville and a Master’s of Business Degree from the University of Illinois-Champaign. After college, Ed worked at Herndon’s Department Stores, rising to the positions of Vice President and Controller. After working at Herndon’s, Ed joined Horace Mann Insurance companies in 1967, where he rose to Vice President and Treasurer of Horace Mann Educators Holding Company and all of the insurance companies. He also served as CEO, CFO and President of several Mutual Funds and as the companies’ Broker Dealer. While at Horace Mann, Ed traveled to many branch offices throughout the country training agents to sell Mutual Funds and helping them get registered with the SEC and NASDAQ. He also traveled numerous times to Insurance Industry Seminars in the USA and Canada giving speeches on Cash Management Techniques.

In 1979, Ed moved to a Chicago suburb and started his own Management Consulting and Executive Recruiting firm (EJ Ashton & Associates) specializing in the insurance industry. He and two other Executive Recruiting firm owners started a nationwide network. He was President of the network for several years while it expanded to nearly 40 firms who shared executive search positions.

After retirement, Ed enjoyed playing poker with his friends once a month. He also enjoyed playing Backgammon with his children and grandchildren. When Ed was younger, he enjoyed playing on a men’s softball league.

Visitation: 4 – 7 pm Monday, September 26, 2016 at Staab Funeral Home-Springfield.

Funeral Service: 10 am Tuesday, September 27, 2016 at Staab Funeral Home-Springfield with Reverend Braden Maher officiating.

Burial will follow at Calvary Cemetery.
