SPRINGFIELD – Edward H. Sauer, 73, of Springfield died at 4:06 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 23, 2007, at St. John’s Hospital.
He was born June 1, 1934, in Spaulding, the son of Edward and Edith M. Schewe Sauer. He married Nancy Foreman on Oct. 20, 1956. He was preceded in death by his parents.
Mr. Sauer was a lifelong resident of Springfield. He worked for the Springfield Police Department, joining it on June 14, 1956, and retiring on May 2, 1988. He was a motorcycle officer, patrolman, beat cop and then worked in the towing division.
He attended Immanuel Lutheran Church in Riverton. He was a member of Illinois Police Association, Police Benevolent Association, Aqua Sports Club and Eagles Aerie 437, where he was a trustee. He enjoyed fishing, gardening, NASCAR and playing shuffleboard.
Surviving are his wife, Nancy Sauer of Springfield; two daughters, Patti L. Sauer (partner, Kim Smith) of Springfield and Toni M. (husband, Michael) Mitchell of Chesapeake, Va.; a son, Edward W. (wife, Julie) Sauer of Springfield; seven grandchildren, Stephen, Erica and Madison Sauer and Mykayla, Marcus, Mackenzie and Madilyn Mitchell; two sisters, Clara Wright and Edith A. (husband, Lee) Hooper, both of Springfield; and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.
Visitation will be held from 4 to 7 p.m. Friday, Oct. 26, 2007, at Staab Funeral Home. Services will be held there at 11 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 27, 2007, with Pastor Robert Jensen officiating. Burial will be in Oak Hill Cemetery.
