SPRINGFIELD, IL- Edward B. Smith,Sr., 84, died at 9:23 pm, October 14, 2016 at the Illinois Veteran’s Home in Quincy, IL. He was born March 8, 1932 in Springfield to Robert M. and Vernice (Horrighs) Smith. He married Mariane Catalano in 1954 and she preceded him in death on February 17, 2012. Also preceding him in death are his parents; one sister, Cecilia Ann Tomlin and one infant sister, Ethel Louise Smith and two brothers, Robert J. Smith and Anthony M. Smith.

He is survived by three sons, Edward B. (Patty Gresta) Smith, Jr. of Springfield, Frank J. (Jayme) Smith of Denver, CO, and Kenneth A. Smith of Bangkok, Thailand; four grandchildren, Cooper Smith of Colorado, Edward (Ashley) Smith III of Palmer, Corrine (Jeff) Gietl of Dawson and Brandi (David) Workman of Springfield; eight great-grandchildren and several nieces, nephews, and cousins.

Edward was a United States Army veteran serving in the Korean Conflict. He retired as a machinist at GM&O after 32 years of service and also retired from Illinois Department of Corrections as a security officer after 12 years of service.

Visitation: 9-11 am, Saturday, October 22, 2016 at Staab Funeral Home-Springfield.

Funeral Service: 11 am, Saturday, October 22, 2016 at Staab Funeral Home-Springfield with Reverend Braden Maher officiating.

Burial will follow at Calvary Cemetery where military honors will be conducted.
