Earl LaRue Defrates, Sr, 87, of Springfield, IL died at 12:34 A.M. on Monday, March 15, 2010 at Memorial Medical Center. He was born on March 23, 1922 in Springfield to Timothy and Jessie Hamilton DeFrates. He married Tillie Gortz in 1948. She preceded him in death on February 9, 2004. LaRue is also preceded in death by his parents and one daughter, Patricia Patty DeFrates.
Surviving are two sons, Lawrence Larry (Susan) DeFrates of San Bernardino, CA and Earl (Dee) DeFrates of Sleepy Hollow, IL; three grandsons: Sean, Dustin and Micael; one sister, Mildred Midge (Jack) Williams of Minneapolis, MN; three brothers, Herbert and Bill (Ruth) DeFrates, both of Springfield and Robert (Elta) DeFrates of Bloomington; several nieces, nephews and cousins and his best friend Teresa Bomke of Springfield.
LaRue was a member of Real Life Church and Toastmasters. He enjoyed golfing, exercising and walking at J.C. Pennys. He was former Pastor of Roanoke Baptist Church and retired from the State of Illinois Department of Transportation, where he worked in the Maintenance Engineering Department. He served in the United States Navy during World War II.
Visitation will be held on Friday, March 19, 2010 from 5-7 p.m. at Staab Funeral Home. LaRue will lie in state from 9:30 to 10 a.m. on Saturday, March 20, 2010 at Real Life Church, followed by a funeral service at 10 a.m. with Pastor Clint Cook Officiating. Interment will be in Roselawn Memorial Park.
