Earl L. Loschen

SPRINGFIELD – Earl. L. Loschen, M.D., 66, a faculty member at SIU School of Medicine, died Tuesday, June 8, 2010, at St. John’s Hospital following a short illness.

Dr. Loschen was born January 10, 1944, in Minden, Nebraska, to Herman and Agnes (Garrelts) Loschen. Graduating valedictorian at Hildreth High, Nebraska in 1962, he went on to graduate from Midland Lutheran College, the University of Nebraska College of Medicine, and the SIU-Carbondale College of Education. He was a faculty member at the SIU School of Medicine from 1974 to the present.

In 1974 he married the love of his life, Marilyn J. Reinhardt, who survives him. Also surviving are two daughters, Rebecca S. Loschen and Elizabeth E.M. Loschen, both of Springfield; 2 sisters, Grace (Stan) Schulz of York, Nebraska and Midge Carlson of Minden, Nebraska; one brother, Jurgen (Chris) Loschen of Hastings, Nebraska; an aunt, Louise Mayhew of California; many nieces, nephews, and cousins; and his best friend, Dr. William Bennett of Oregon.

Dr. Loschen was an international expert in rural psychiatry, intellectual disabilities, and problem-based learning in medical education. He published extensively and most recently edited the Diagnostic Manual for the Intellectually Disabled. Some of the organizations he worked with include the National Association for the Dually Diagnosed (Board of Directors), ARC of Illinois (Board of Directors), Illinois Psychiatric Society (President), and the Illinois Department of Human Services (Autism Task Force and Lincoln Developmental Center Task Force). For his outstanding work and volunteerism, he received the Frank Melanoscino Award for Excellence for his work with the intellectually disabled and the Adele M, Karlson Lifetime Achievement Award from SPARC.

His hobbies included worldwide travel, vacationing with family, gardening, cooking, and music.

Visitation will be from 4-7 p.m. Friday, June 11, 2010, at Staab Funeral Home. Funeral service will be at 9:30 a.m. Saturday, June 12, 2010, at Christ the King Church, Monsignor David Lantz and Reverend Cari Wilmert officiating. Burial will be in Oak Ridge Cemetery.
