E. Gene Pool, 93, of Springfield died Monday, December 3, 2018 at St. John’s Hospital. He was born Oct. 2, 1925, in Ottawa, IL the son of Everett W. and Inez B. Pool. He married Frances June Friddle in 1953.
Mr. Pool graduated from Ottawa Township High School and the University of Illinois. He was a World War II veteran with combat service in the European (ETO) Theater (France and Germany) where the 100th (Century) Infantry Division earned campaign banners for the Rhineland, Ardennes-Alsace, and Central European campaigns.
He was awarded a Bronze Star Medal in the battle for Heilbronn where his battalion won its second Presidential Unit Citation.
As a reservist during the Korean War, he served with the 8047th (Japan) Signal Service Bn. in Yokohama, Japan.
Following military service, he was employed at the Ottawa Daily Times newspaper and later by the Illinois Education Association in Springfield.
He was a member of the Harding Methodist Church, Marseilles Masonic Lodge 417, 100th Infantry Division Assn. and the C&IM chapter of the National Railway Historical Society.
Survivors include a son, Jeffrey (wife, Donna) of Redondo Beach, CA. His wife, Frances and his sister, Evelyn Goetsch, preceded him in death.
Graveside services: 2:00 pm, Tuesday, December 11, 2018 at Camp Butler National Cemetery, Springfield with Reverend Nicole Cox officiating. Military honors will be conducted.
Cremation rites have been accorded.
Memorial contributions may be made to St. Joseph’s Home in Springfield.
