SPRINGFIELD – Dwight E. Gene Bee, 77, of Springfield died at 12:43 p.m. Thursday, May 29, 2008, at his home surrounded by his family.
He was born April 25, 1931, in Springfield, the son of Dwight E. and Jessie F. Schroeder Bee. He married Darlene Bearden on Feb. 10, 1951. He was preceded in death by his parents; two sisters, Norma J. Semon and Donna J. McCurley; and a grandson, John E. Suter.
Mr. Bee was a lifelong resident of Springfield.
Gene was in charge of the Illinois Department of Law Enforcement data processing office with the installation of the department’s first computer. Gene was the LEADS administrator and oversaw the development of the Illinois LEADS System into one of the most sophisticated computer systems in the nation and the leading user of the FBI’s National Crime Information Center and the National Law Enforcement Telecommunication System. Gene also was a very active participant on the national level. He served on the NCIC Advisory Policy Board, was chairman of the NCIC North Central Region Working Group and served on sub-committees and groups too numerous to mention. After retiring from the state he created a partnership and formed Bee Consulting and Computer Systems serving law enforcement agencies statewide.
He was a member of Elliott Avenue Baptist Church. He graduated from Lanphier High School. He spent winters in McAllen, Texas, for more than 20 years. He loved softball and golf and was a volunteer for the LPGA and the State Farm Classic. Gene played and pitched fast-pitch softball on the Elliott Avenue Baptist Church team in the Protestant Church League at Lincoln Park for 40 years. He was regional director of the American Softball Association for all men, women and youth regional and state softball tournaments for 25 years.
Surviving are his wife, Darlene Bee of Springfield; two daughters, Gail (husband, Tom) Hendrickson of Springfield and Barbara Suter of St. Louis; two grandchildren, Amie Suter and Ryan Hendrickson; and many nieces, nephews and cousins.
Visitation will be held from 4 to 7 p.m. Sunday, June 1, 2008, at Staab Funeral Home. Services will be held at 11 a.m. Monday, June 2, 2008, at Staab Funeral Home with the Rev. Roger Jackson officiating. Burial will be in Oak Ridge Cemetery.
