Dr. Joseph Jude Maurer, 84, of Springfield, passed away on Monday, December 27, 2021 at his home. He was born on January 21, 1937, in Springfield, the son of Anton J. and Anna V. (Doerfler) Maurer. He married Rosetta M. Tega on June 18, 1956 and she preceded him in death on June 17, 2009.
He is also preceded in death by his parents; two sons, John A. Maurer and Dr. Christopher L. Maurer; and sister, Rita Patton.
Survivors include eight children: Dr. Joanne Maurer (Dr. Mark Gekas), Mary Rose (Tom) Hoffman, both of Springfield, Joseph J. Maurer, Jr. (Lisa) of Texas, Matthew J. Maurer (Kristina) of Springfield, Linda Shoemaker of Riverton, Diane Howard (Rex Bruss), Dr. Susan Maurer (Denise Wend), and Daniel A. Maurer (Rachael), all of Springfield; 14 grandchildren; brother, Tony (Julie) Maurer of Fort Wayne, IN; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.
Joseph was a United States Army veteran. He was a doctor in internal medicine for over 50 years. He was happiest when he was surrounded by his grandkids, family, friends, and pets. Joseph was a devoted Chicago Bears fan. He had an interest in genealogy.
Visitation: 10 am – 12 pm, Friday, December 31, 2021 at St. Agnes Catholic Church.
Funeral Mass: 12 pm, Friday, December 31, 2021 at St. Agnes Catholic Church, with Reverend David Bergbower officiating. Burial will follow at Old Salem Cemetery, where military honors will be conducted.
