Dr. Charles E. Hendricks, 94, passed from this mortal life on May 19, 2018 at The Christian Village in Lincoln. He formerly lived in Springfield, most recently at the Illinois Presbyterian Home. Charles “Chuck” was born in Harvel, IL on September 21, 1923, one of two sons of Charlie and Addie Hendricks. Charles was preceded in death by his wife, Nan Ellen, who passed from this mortal life on January 13, 2013, they had been married for 63 years. He was also preceded in death by his brother, Robert Hendricks.
Surviving are their children, David (Julie) of Hillsboro, IL, Lon (Nancy) of St. Paul, MN, and Julie Kasa (Paul) of Lincoln, IL. There are eight grandchildren: Mark (Natalie), Joy (John), Kay (Matthew), Michael (Courtney), Rachel (Ryan), Rebecca, Haley and Hannah. They were blessed with seven great-grandchildren: Samuel, John, Amelia, Edward, Jessica, Sarah and Alexander.
Charles “Chuck” was an ordained minister in the United Presbyterian Church of the U.S.A. since 1950.
To prepare to this life work, he graduated from the following schools: Morrisonville High School, University of Dubuque, University of Dubuque Theological Seminary, and the Doctor of Ministry division of McCormick Seminary, Chicago. He served churches in Iowa and Illinois, the last of which was Third Presbyterian Church, Springfield, serving this church for 17 years as Senior Minister and head of staff. After retiring in 1988, he served two interim pastorates, Hillsboro and Raymond, Illinois. He often said that he enjoyed every minute of his life as a pastor.
He served three years in the 97th Infantry (after high school) where he played his trombone in the marching band and orchestra. This took him to both Europe and Asia, the last six months in Japan.
Visitation: 5 – 7 pm, Thursday, May 24, 2018 at Third Presbyterian Church.
Funeral Service: 10 am, Friday, May 25, 2018 at Third Presbyterian Church with Dr. Joe Eby officiating.
Burial will follow at Oak Ridge Cemetery.
