SPRINGFIELD – Dorothy J. Graves, 82, of Springfield died at 8:15 a.m. on Sunday, June 27, 2010, at St. John’s Hospice. She was born on January 22, 1928 in Springfield to Leslie and Emily Marcy Gentry. She was preceded in death by her parents; one sister, Elizabeth Santarelli; and one brother, Alfred Gentry.
Dorothy is survived by three daughters, Linda Shomidie, Roberta (Robert) Cleeton and Emily Castleman all of Springfield; five sons, John (Judy) Graves, Gary (Patricia) Graves, Joe (Janet) Graves, Robert (companion, Joe Medina) Graves II, all of Springfield and James (Anna) Graves of Berlin, IL; 22 grandchildren; 40 great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.
She was a great mother, grandmother, great-grandmother and great-great-grandmother. Dorothy is a member of West Side Christian Church. She was a former softball player, an avid reader, and was a caretaker to many stray animals. She worked as a clerk at the Sangamon County Clerk’s office, but her greatest job was being a homemaker.
Visitation will be held from 4-7 p.m. on Wednesday, June 30, 2010, at Staab Funeral Home. Dorothy will lie in state from 9:30 until the time of service at 10 a.m. on Thursday, July 1, 2010, at West Side Christian Church. Gary Winkleman will officiate. Burial will be at Oak Ridge Cemetery.
