SPRINGFIELD – Dorothy Ilene Garwood, 82, of Springfield passed away at 7:21 a.m. on Sunday, August 9, 2009, at Memorial Medical Center.
She was born in Quincy on September 13, 1926, to Ernest and Bertha Silman Calhoun. She married Murlyn T. Garwood in Quincy on May 15, 1948; he survives.
She is also survived by daughters, Jane Garwood-Cutler (husband, James Cutler) of Oak Park and Joyce Garwood of Chicago; brother, Carl Calhoun of Rancho Cucamonga, California; grandchildren, Julia (husband, Michael) Boyce of Wheaton, Jason Cutler of Elmhurst and Jill Cutler of Chicago; great-grandchildren, Clara, Sean and Aaron Boyce of Wheaton; sister-in-law, M. Pauline (husband, Robert deceased) Bennett of Quincy; and numerous nieces and nephews including, Sara (husband, George) Bradfield and John Bennett of Quincy.
Siblings, Clarence Vernon Calhoun, Charles Buddy Calhoun, Ernestine Garrison, Mary Kirner, and James Calhoun preceded her in death.
Dorothy was retired as an accountant and contract manager for the state of Illinois Department of Mental Health. She was educated in Quincy public schools and at Lincoln Land Community College. She was a devoted member of Faith Evangelical Lutheran Church, the Sangamon County Animal Protective League, Life Long Learners of Lincoln Land Community College, and American Legion Post 32 Auxiliary. Dorothy was an accomplished cook and seamstress, having earned numerous awards in past years from the Illinois State Fair for both baked goods and clothing.
Visitation will be held from 4:00-6:00 p.m. on Thursday, August 13, 2009, at Faith Evangelical Lutheran Church, with funeral services at 6:15 p.m., with the Reverend Glen VanderKloot officiating. Burial will be in Oak Ridge Cemetery.
Memorials may be made to Faith Evangelical Lutheran Church of Springfield or Sangamon County Animal Protective League.
