Donald G. (Don) Hartlaub of Springfield, died at 9:50, March 17, 2018 at his home after a short battle with brain cancer. He was born July 10, 1951 in Aurora, IL to Donald G. and Shirley Weston Hartlaub, Sr. He married Mary A. Goldstein on July 29, 1978.

He is survived by his wife Mary, daughter, Kristi (Justin) Ford and son, Brian (Amanda) Hartlaub and Grandchildren Paige, Makenna and Karsyn Ford and Gavin, Griffin, Gradyn and Giuliana Hartlaub. Siblings: Marie (Jim) Mathew, Kathy (Randy) Michelson, John (Tina) Hartlaub, Joe (Stephanie) Hartlaub and Theresa (Brad) Clemmons and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

He was preceded in death by his parents and his mother and father in law, Andy and Mary Goldstein.

Don graduated from Aurora Central Catholic High School and continued his education at Millikin University in Decatur, IL. While attending Millikin, he was a member of the SAE fraternity and competed in the Track and Field and Basketball programs. Don furthered his education at North Texas University where he obtained his Master’s Degree while teaching at Saginaw Middle School. Don was a teacher and coach for 35 years at Buffalo Tri-City, Saginaw, TX, and Riverton High School. He retired as a Dean of Students/Administrator at Plainfield Central High School in Plainfield, IL where he was the head track coach.

Don touched so many of his students’ lives in positive ways and was dedicated to his student athletes that continued for years after his retirement. He was touched to hear from so many former athletes via cards, personal letters, visits and phone calls of how he had made an impact on their lives. Don coached High School girls basketball and established the Sangamon County Girls Basketball Tournament in 1993, as he saw the need to highlight the Girls Basketball Program. He loved all sports but Track and Field was his passion and he truly relished every minute of time spent with his athletes on the track. He was one of the co-founders of the Honor Roll Classic which began in 1981 and is still held annually.

Don was a devout Catholic and was a member of Christ the King Parish. After he retired his competitive outlet became the golf course which he loved and was a member of Panther Creek Country Club. He was an avid Cubs fan all his life. He loved traveling but above all he enjoyed spending time with family and friends and attending the grandkids’ activities.

Visitation: 4-7 pm Wednesday, March 21, 2018 at Staab Funeral Home – Springfield, with a prayer services at 4 pm.

Funeral Mass: 11 am, Thursday, March 22, 2018 at Christ the King Church with Reverend Joe Ring officiating.

Graveside Service: 11 am, Friday, March 23, 2018 at Roselawn Memorial Park.
