SPRINGFIELD – Donald E. Castles, 90, of Springfield passed away at 7:00 a.m. Saturday, May 24, 2008, at Memorial Medical Center.
He was born on June 28, 1917, in Springfield, the son of Harry and Fannie Fox Castles. He married Eloise Velie on Feb. 27, 1937, in Decatur.
He was preceded in death by his parents; a son, Kenneth W. Castles; and two brothers, Harry and Scott Castles.
He is survived by his wife; a daughter, Sandra Skeeters of Springfield; a son, Donald E. Castles of Fort Lauderdale, Fla.; three grandchildren, Traci Skeeters, Russell Castles and Kendra (husband, Peter) Deane; seven great-grandchildren; and a nephew.
He retired from the state of Illinois Department of Public Aid and worked at Coe’s Bookstore for 17 years.
Donald was a lifelong resident of Springfield. He was a member of Grace Lutheran Church. He was a United States Navy veteran serving during World War II in the South Pacific and a 50-year member of the Masonic Lodge. He also enjoyed bowling.
Visitation will be from 11 a.m. to noon Friday May 30, 2008, at Staab Funeral Home, with the Rev. Juli Lejman-Guy officiating. Funeral services will immediately follow visitation at the funeral home. Burial will be at Oak Ridge Cemetery.
Memorials may be made to to Shriner’s Hospital for Children.
