Donald “Don? W. Thorp
Donald “Don? W. Thorp, 58, a Springfield resident for over 30 years, died at 6:36 p.m. Thursday, August 9, 2007, in the Cardiac Care Unit at Memorial Medical Center.
Don was born July 15, 1949, in Peoria, the son of Eugene and Imo Jane (Adcox) Thorp. He graduated from high school in Washburn, IL and received his bachelor’s degree in Business Management from Sangamon State University in 1991. He worked for C&IM Railroad for more than 15 years before his employment at the State of Illinois Department of Health Care and Family Services for over 10 years as Administrative Assistant in Fiscal Operations.
He volunteered as an usher for over 11 years at Sangamon Auditorium. He also volunteered at Abraham Lincoln Presidential Library. Don was an avid golfer as well as enjoyed dining out with his many friends in Springfield restaurants.
Survivors include his sister, Beverly Roberts of Dallas, TX; brothers Gerald Thorp of Plano, TX and Charles (Heidie) Thorp of Lena, IL; one aunt, Mildred Bliss of Tremont, IL; four nephews: Kevin Murphy, Frank Murphy, Craig Thorp and Martin Thorp. He is preceded in death by his parents.
Don was a much loved and treasured brother and friend, whose warmth, sense of humor, kindness and friendship will be deeply missed. We are so fortunate to have had him in our lives, as we are richer for having known him. We hope that wherever he is, it’s the same as in town.
Visitation will be from 4-7 p.m. Sunday, August 12, at Staab Funeral Home. Private services will be held at Oak Ridge Cemetery later in the week. Memorials may be made to the American Diabetes Association.
