Dennis W. Shryock, 89, of Springfield, died Wednesday, September 28, 2011 at St. John’s Hospice. He was born on August 31, 1922 in Canton, IL. He married Blanche Fern Bright on October 4, 1948 and she preceded him in death on August 18, 1996. Also preceding him in death was his daughter, Pamela G. Shryock on January 22, 2000.
Mr. Shryock attended Southern View Chapel. He served with the Illinois State Militia. He was a United States Navy Veteran during World War II, serving in three invasions including Normandy, Southern France and Sorento, Italy. He was a 1st Class Gunners Mate and received Amphibious training NCDU Naval Combat Demolition Unit 136 Underwater Demolition Team. His service continued with the 106th Cavalry N.G. and Tank Commander 44th Division N.G. Mr. Shryock was a member of the Drum and Bugle Corps Graves Detail.
Mr. Shryock retired after 47 years from ICC in Springfield.
Surviving are three daughters; Dennise Zamora, Donna Barlow and Kelly Hampton, a son Gregory Shryock, 4 grandchildren and 5 great grandchildren, a brother Lee Shryock.
Memorial Gathering: 10 a.m. – 12 p.m., Wednesday, October 5, 2011 at Staab Funeral Home.
Graveside Service: 1:00 p.m. Wednesday October 5, 2011 at Camp Butler National Cemetery with Pastor Gary Gilley officiating and Military Honors will be conducted.
