SPRINGFIELD – Dennis A. Herbert, 64, of Springfield died at 8:40 a.m. Monday, Jan. 18, 2010, at Memorial Medical Center.
He was born July 4, 1945, in Boone, Iowa, the son of Bernard Bud W. and Wanda Ahrens Herbert; they preceded him in death. He married Ellen Y. Bilkey on Dec. 14, 1968.
He is survived by his wife, Ellen Y. Herbert of Springfield; a daughter, Kara L. (Jasen) Riba of Springfield; a son, Jason A. Herbert of Springfield; a grandson, Jack J. Riba; a brother, Randy Herbert of Ajo, Ariz.; an adopted sister, Janine Herbert of Maine; and several aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, and cousins.
Dennis worked for the Illinois Department of Transportation as an engineering technician, where he was a CADD operator in bridge design.
Dennis was very active at Trinity Evangelical Lutheran Church, where he formerly served as an elder. He was a Vietnam War veteran serving in the U.S. Navy. He was a past member of Southern Cruisers, ABATE, Springfield Bicycle Club and Iron Workers Union 16 and a member of the VFW Post 10302.
He enjoyed riding his motorcycle and bicycle, leather making and camping and loved being outdoors and canoeing at Current River. He earned his associate’s degree from Morrison Institute of Technology.
A memorial gathering will be held from noon until the time of celebration of life services at 2 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 23, 2010, at Staab Funeral Home, with the Rev. Dr. Thomas Radtke officiating. Private burial will be held at Camp Butler National Cemetery at a later date.
The family requests donations be made to Trinity Evangelical Lutheran Church or the Autism Project.
