Darrel I. Dugger, 85, of Springfield, died at 2:25 pm, Tuesday, June 12, 2012 at Memorial Medical Center. He was born December 28, 1926 in Scott County, IL to Irven and Hazel Wilbur Dugger. He married JoAnn M. Roth on October 29, 1948 and she preceded him in death on February 5, 1998.
Survivors include two daughters, Deborah K. Leahy of Springfield and Susan M. (Kerry) Jones of El Dorado Springs, MO; three grandchildren, Patricia Szydlowski of Reedsburg, WI and Erin and Bryan Jones both of Missouri; four great grandchildren; two sisters Marjorie Baugh of Springfield and Mary Lou Graham of Virden, one brother, Ray (JoAnne) Dugger of Quincy, a special friend, Dorothy Hoover of Springfield and several nieces, nephews and cousins.
He was preceded in death by his parents, wife, two brothers, William and Paul Dugger and one sister, Jean Anne Watson.
Darrel was a WWII Navy Veteran serving aboard the USS Bunker Hill when it was attacked by two Kamikazes en route to Okinawa. During the Korean Conflict he was aboard the Macon, a heavy cruiser. He was a consummate collector of “treasures”.
He worked as a cement laborer for Union #477.
Visitation: 10am – 12pm, Friday, June 15, 2012 at Staab Funeral Home.
Funeral Service: 12 pm, Friday, June 15, 2012 at Staab Funeral Home with Bob Green officiating. Burial will be at Camp Butler National Cemetery where Sangamon County Interveterans will conduct military honors.
