Daniel Wayne VonBerg, P.E.

Daniel Wayne VonBerg, P.E., died on June 26, 2016 at Concordia Village. He was born on December 7, 1933 in West Allis, WI to Ivan Benjamin VonBerg and Rosabel Marie Forster. Dan married Carola Mary Rickmeyer on December 28, 1954 and their loving relationship was blessed with 7 children, 21 grandchildren, and 7 great grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.
Dan and Carola’s children and their spouses are: John (Ramona) VonBerg and Rosanne (Robert) Wiatrolik of Springfield; Catherine (Ricardo) Acevedo of LaCrescent, MN; Roberta (Rodney) Misak of Carmel, IN; Thomas (Teresa) VonBerg of Racine, WI; Janice (James) Raymond of Saline, MI; and Edward (Kristen) VonBerg of San Antonio, TX. His brother is Darrell of Sturgeon Bay, WI. His sister Beverly and his parents preceded him in death.
Dan belonged to the Boy Scouts for over 65 years and attained the rank of Eagle Scout and as an Explorer Scout was awarded the Silver Award. As an adult he was awarded the St. George Medal. Throughout the 65 years he has been active in many local, district and council activities.
He was also active in several professional organizations including the Indiana and Illinois Professional Engineers Societies, Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers, where he was a Chapter President during the 60’s; and the Association of Conservation Engineers. Dan was president of the Parkinson Disease Support Group of Central Illinois for 11 years.
Dan volunteered to serve 3 years in the Regular Army and was assigned to the First Guided Missile Brigade at Fort Bliss, TX; where he became a radar and computer instructor. He even got to lecture a few times to the army’s officers’ war college, where all of the students were field grade officers- many of which were generals.
After serving out his enlistment, Dan went back to Marquette U. to finish his EE degree work. While in school he worked at Centralab along with Jack Kilby, who later was awarded the Nobel Prize for his development of the transistor. He then worked for Magnavox and later at Sangamo Electric as a research and development engineer on classified anti-submarine warfare projects. While working for the Illinois Dept. of Public Health, Dan developed the MERCI statewide system for ambulance to hospital and hospital to hospital communications. He also contributed to the development of 911 dispatch centers. In 1995, he retired from the Illinois Department of Natural Resources as their Electrical Engineer, where he was author of the campground computer electrical design manual and several changes in the National Electric Code.
Dan was active in the parish activities at Christ the King Church. He was of the first Eucharistic Minister’s, served as Pres. and V.P. of the Over 50 club and served on the Parish Council.
Visitation: 4 – 7 pm, Thursday, June 30, 2016 at Staab Funeral Home with a prayer service at 4:00 pm.

Funeral Mass: 10:30 am, Friday, July 1, 2016 at Blessed Sacrament Church with Reverend Joe Ring and Monsignor David Lantz officiating.

Graveside Service: 10 am, Saturday, July 2, 2016 at Camp Butler National Cemetery where military honors will be conducted.
