Coleen A. Mays, 68, of Springfield, passed away at 10:32 am, Thursday, March 2, 2017 at Concordia Village. She was born December 15, 1948 in Bloomington, IL to Jerome and Florence Schopp of Chenoa, IL. She was preceded in death by her father, nieces and nephews.

She is survived by her husband, Ronald Vaughan Mays originally of Chenoa, IL whom she married 49 years ago on January 27, 1968. They have five children; Rhonda Coleen (Christopher) Owsley of Springfield, Rhett Douglas Mays of Springfield, Robin Ellen Mays of Seattle, WA, Renee Annette Mays of Springfield and Rebecca Elizabeth (Ryan) Townsend of Lincoln, NE; six grandchildren, Nolan Jerome Mays, Rachel Bonita Mays, Luke David Owsley and Noah Vaughan Owsley, all of Springfield; Cody Joseph Townsend and Drew Michael Townsend of Lincoln, NE; mother, Florence Mae Schopp of Normal; three sisters, Kitty (Ron) McBroom of Sycamore, IL, Camilla (Roger) Winterland of Pontiac and Connie (Gary) Koerner of Leroy; three brothers, Al (JoAnne) Schopp of Denver, CO, Rusty (Jana) Schopp of Normal and Bob (Julie) Schopp of Normal and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

During her lifetime, Coleen helped run and maintain a hogging operation for several years. She was a 10 year volunteer for Rape Information and Counseling Service, serving as Board Member and Past President. She was a founding Charter Board Member of the Sangamon State Prairie Stars soccer organization. She was the first woman to serve on YMCA’S youth soccer board of directors and a founding member of the Springfield Area Soccer Association (SASA), for which she also wrote the original by-laws. She received a certificate and recognition from UIS for being instrumental in the growth of women’s soccer in Springfield. She was also a survivor speaker for the American Heart Association. Coleen retired in 1982 as a 10 year real estate broker/owner of Mays Real Estate.

Visitation: 4 – 7 pm, Sunday, March 5, 2017 at Staab Funeral Home – Springfield, with a prayer service at 4 pm. There will be a second visitation from 10-11 am, Monday, March 6, 2017 at Blessed Sacrament Church.

Funeral Mass: 11 am, Monday, March 6, 2017 at Blessed Sacrament Church with Reverend Jim Isaacson officiating. Burial will follow at Calvary Cemetery.

Memorial contributions may be made to Coleen Mays Memorial Fund to be distributed to youth organizations at the family’s discretion. Springfield Area Soccer Association, or the North American Martyrs School- Playground Fund.
