Clifford “Bill” Henderson, 88, of Springfield, passed away on Saturday, February 4, 2017 at St. John’s Hospital surrounded by his family. He was born February 9, 1928 in Mt. Auburn Township to Arthur John and Harsha Faye (Cantral) Henderson. He married Mary Cirillo on December 30, 1950 and she preceded him in death on February 5, 1999. He later married Maureen Gand on August 5, 2005 and she survives.
Also surviving are his two daughters, Theresa (Thomas) Thompson of Springfield and Diane Scattergood of Riverton; one step-daughter, Julianna (Brent) Brooks of Springfield; two step-sons, Kenneth (Diane) Gand of Springfield and Steven (Marilynne) Gand of Spaulding; six grandchildren, Raegan (Jason) Hamrick, Michael (Erika) Thompson, Clifford Scattergood, Joseph (Melissa) Scattergood, Stephen Scattergood, and Donald (Tara) Scattergood; four step-grandchildren, A.J. Gand, Blake Gand, Will Brooks, and Hunter Brooks; sixteen great-grandchildren, Ella, Alex, Ava, Dominic, Addie, Reese, Damien, Kaleb, Alivia, Caiden, Amelia, Jaxon, Jace, Alyssa, Korbin, and Drake; and several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Mary Henderson and three brothers, Roy, Ray, and Donald Henderson.
Clifford was a United States Army veteran, serving during the Korean War. He retired from Fiat Allis in 1985 after 37 ½ years of service. He had also worked for Vickers Manufacturing and Amrhein Bakery.
He is a member of St. Cabrini Church. He was an active volunteer at St. Cabrini Church and the Illinois Easter Seals. He participated in the St. John’s Cardiac Rehab, Catholic War veterans, Knights of Columbus in Devereux Heights, and Eagles Club.
Clifford enjoyed woodworking, taking rides and looking at tractors, dancing, and music. Most of all, he enjoyed spending time with his family.
Visitation: 4-7 pm, Tuesday, February 7, 2017 at Staab Funeral Home-Springfield with a prayer service being held at 4 pm.
Funeral Mass: 10:30 am, Wednesday, February 8, 2017 at St. Cabrini Church. Burial will follow at Camp Butler National Cemetery where military honors will be conducted.
Memorials may be made to the Illinois Easter Seals or the Prairie Heart Fund.
