Charles W. Gregory, 89, of Springfield, died at 7:45 am, Saturday, December 25, 2010 at St. John’s Hospital. He was born October 14, 1921 in Mooresville, NC to John A. and Rosa Irene Smith Gregory. He married Betty Lee Thompson on November 19, 1949 in Morgantown, WV and she preceded him in death on January 16, 2003. Also preceding him in death were his parents; one son, Jeffrey Lee Gregory and three brothers, John, Clinton and Finley Gregory.
He is survived by one daughter Catherine (Leslie) Blackford of Corydon, IA; three sons, Charles (Cheryl) Gregory of Foster City, CA, Joel (Linda) Gregory of Ocean Springs, MS and Craig (Marianne) Gregory of Bussum, Netherlands; twelve grandchildren; 4 great grandchildren, two sisters Catherine (Tom) Priester of Maryland and Rosamond Street of Masontown, WV and several nieces, nephews and cousins.
Charles was a U.S. Army Veteran, serving during WWII. He was a member of Cherry Hills Baptist Church, where he was active in Sunday School and Men’s groups. He was a member of the 100th Infantry Division. Meeting with his retired friends and veteran’s groups for lunch and remembering past times was something he greatly enjoyed and he dearly loved his dog Miss Elise. He retired as an agent for the FBI in 1977 and then worked for a short time for SETA and had been a resident of Springfield since 1970.
Visitation: 4-6 p.m., Thursday, December 30, 2010 at Staab Funeral Home
Funeral Service: 11 a.m., Friday, December 31, 2010 at Staab Funeral Home with Pastor Steve Patzia officiating.
Additional visitation will be held in West Virginia from 10-10:30 a.m. on Tuesday, January 4, 2011 followed by a graveside service at Sunset Memorial Park in Charleston, WV
Memorials may be made to Cherry Hills Baptist Church.
