SPRINGFIELD – Charles Richard Smith Sr., 73, of Springfield died at 1 a.m. Tuesday, Sept. 15, 2009, at St. John’s Hospital.
He was born Sept. 29, 1935, in Mechanicsburg, the son of Calvin and Eva Langley Smith. He married Shirley M. Milner in 1968. He was preceded in death by his parents; five brothers; and a sister.
Mr. Smith, a resident of Springfield most of life, was a union laborer and asphalt layer.
He was of the Christian faith. He loved watching UFC and football and was a former racer at Springfield Speedway. He was an Air Force veteran, serving in the Korean Conflict.
Surviving are his wife, Shirley M. Smith of Springfield; two daughters, Debbie (John) Jones and Charla Smith, both of Springfield; five sons, John (Linda) Blue of Springfield, Don (Patti) Blue of Nilwood, Brian Blue of Bloomington, Rick (Karan) Blue of Monument, Colo., and Charles (Alicia Kunz) Smith Jr. of Springfield; 21 grandchildren;
17 great-grandchildren; three sisters; one brother; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.
Visitation will be held from 9 a.m. until time of service at 10 a.m. Friday, Sept. 18, 2009, at Staab Funeral Home with Pastor Jeff Blevins officiating. Private burial will be held.
