SPRINGFIELD – Charles H. Scrivner, Sr., 89, of Springfield passed away Wednesday, May 7, 2009 at his home.
He was born February 1, 1920 in Patterson, IA. He had lived in California prior to serving in the U.S. Navy (Pacific Fleet) during WW II. In 1946 he married Anne Witcuskie Scrivner on March 6, 1946 who preceded him in death on May 30, 1997.
Charlie (Chuck) had lived in Springfield since 1946. He worked at Allis-Chalmers until 1967 and then at Pitney Bowes until his retirement in 1985.
He especially enjoyed his volunteer work at Memorial Medical Center, having served for more than 20 years, most recently helping in the Baylis outpatient facility. He also enjoyed participation in several breakfast and coffee groups with fellow retirees.
He will be sadly missed by his two children, son, Charles (Nancy) Scrivner, Jr. of New Hamburg, NY and daughter, Anne Marie of Rochester, IL; grandchildren, Monica of New York and Ivan of Athens, GA; and his brothers, Ivan and Paul; and sisters, Mary Peak, Lois Burt, and May Ewart, all of IA.
He was preceded in death by his parents; wife; brothers, Guy B., Grant, Gene, and Joe Scrivner; and sister, Ruth Smith.
A memorial gathering will be held from 12-1 p.m. Tuesday, May 12, 2009 at Staab Funeral Home. A memorial service will be held 1 p.m. Tuesday, May 12, 2009, at Staab Funeral Home, with Pastor Mark Gifford presiding. Burial will be at Camp Butler National Cemetery, where military honors will be conducted by Sangamon County Interveterans Burial Detail.
Memorials may be made to the Animal Protective League.
