Charles Charlie Eugene Gietl, 61, of Mechanicsburg, died at 2:00 pm on Friday, January 14, 2011 at his home. He was born November 22, 1949 in Springfield, IL the son of Raymond L. and Rose E. Gietl.
Charlie attended St. Peters and Paul’s and Christ the King Grade Schools and graduated from St. James Trade School. He was a member of the Illinois Air National Guard and served with the Guard in Germany and Alaska. He worked as a floor covering contractor for more than 30 years.
Charlie enjoyed the rustic life: fishing, camping in Southern Illinois, woodworking, crafting folk art, singing songs and sharing good times with friends. He was the lead singer in several local rock bands in the 1970’s, and played the starring role in the Muni Opera’s first production of the musical You’re a Good Man Charlie Brown.
Charlie lived in central Illinois, except for the 10 years he lived in a mountain cabin in Colorado.
He is survived by mother, Rose (Bettie) Gietl; brothers James (Jenny), Donald (Loy), Terry (Beth) and Ted (Sandy); and several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his father, Raymond L. Gietl.
Services: 11am, Wednesday, January 19, 2011 at Calvary Cemetery Chapel. Msgr. John Ossola officiating. Burial will follow at Calvary Cemetery.
Visitation: 4-6pm, Tuesday, January 18, 2011 at Staab Funeral Home.
