Charles Austin Wombwell, 89 of Springfield, died peacefully with his family by his side at 8:40 am, Wednesday, August 5, 2015, at Memorial Medical Center. He was born December 6, 1925 in St. Paul, MN to Charles Austin Sr. and Marie Leschinsky Wombwell. He married Mary Ann Florian on December 30, 1950 in St. Paul, MN and later married Eleanor Gifford on February 14, 1981.

Survivors include his wife Eleanor of Springfield, one daughter, Cathryn Ann (Pat) Rolens of Springfield; three sons, Francis Joseph (Mary Kay) Wombwell of DE, John Michael Wombwell of Tampa, FL and Carl Andrew (Sheri) Wombwell of St. James, MO and their mother, Mary Ann Wombwell of Springfield; one step daughter, Stacey R. Porro of Clearwater, FL; two stepsons, Douglas E. Gifford of Springfield and Bradley T. (Paige) Gifford of Brandon, FL; ten grandchildren; six great grandchildren and one brother Paul Wombwell of KS.

He was preceded in death by his parents and one son, Stephen Charles Wombwell.

Charles was a US Navy and Seabees veteran serving during WWII on the USS Turner. He began his career as a US Army Strategic Engineer Intelligence Division Geographer. He was a city and regional planner.
He was a member of Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception.

He was a lifelong member of the DAV. He enjoyed hiking and fishing. He was a devoted Catholic and led a prayerful life.

Visitation: 4-6 pm, Sunday, August 9, 2015 at Staab Funeral Home. There will be a rosary lead at 3:30 followed by a prayer service at 4 pm.

Funeral Mass: 12:30 pm Monday, August 10, 2015 at Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception with Reverend Christopher House officiating. Burial to follow at Camp Butler National Cemetery where military honors will be conducted.

In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to Cathedral Grade School.
