SPRINGFIELD – Catherine J. Mans, 89, of Springfield died at 5:45 a.m. Wednesday, June 2, 2010, at Memorial Medical Center.
She was born June 13, 1920, in DuQuoin, Illinois to Joseph and Catherine Bianco DeRorre.
Catherine attended public schools in DuQuoin and worked alongside her mother in the soup kitchens during the Depression. Following high school graduation, she went to work in Springfield. Later she worked at Jack’s Tavern in Alton, where she met her future husband, Gene. They were married on May 15, 1945, and lived in Collinsville. Daughters Joyce and Cathy soon joined the family.
Catherine was active in the Progressive Mine Workers Auxiliary, but her greatest job was as a housewife and mother, then grandmother to Katie and Chris. For many years Catherine would pack up the grandkids for the annual summer trek to California to spend the summer with Aunt Joyce and Uncle Gary. She so enjoyed giving them the opportunity to see the world. Then it would be home for Catherine to tend to her beloved garden.
She is survived by her daughters, Joyce (Gary) Glentzer of Martinez, CA and Catherine A. (David) Mikus of Springfield; 2 grandchildren, Catherine R. (Robin Shook) Mikus of Columbia, MO and Christopher (Brandy) Mikus of Springfield; 1 great-granddaughter, Emillie; 3 nieces; 1 nephew; and 1 cousin.
She was preceded in death by her husband; parents; 1 brother, Felix DeRorre; and 1 sister, Antoinette DeRorre.
Visitation will be from 9 a.m. – 12 p.m. Saturday, June 5, 2010, at Staab Funeral Home. Graveside service will be at 3 p.m. Saturday, June 5, 2010, at Holy Cross Lutheran Cemetery in Collinsville, Illinois.
