GAINESVILLE, Fla. – Carl Gabriel of Gainesville died Sunday, June 1, 2008, at the age of 83.
Mr. Gabriel taught math for 46 years and enjoyed every day of it. He moved to Gainesville with his wife of nearly 51 years in October 2007, after residing in Key West, Fla., for the last 40 years. He served in the U.S. Air Corps in Japan and the Philippines during World War II as a radar specialist.
Carl received degrees from Southwest Missouri State University and Saint Louis University, with post-graduate work done at Loyola University in Chicago, Knox College in Galesburg and Saint Louis University. He was the recipient of National Science Foundation Grants to further his studies. His teaching career began in Lamar, Mo., and continued in New Berlin and LaSalle for 10 years and from 1967 to 1995 at Florida Keys Community College in Key West, where he retired.
Carl was preceded in death by his parents, Frances and Lars Gabriel.
He is survived by his wife, Florence Reichart Gabriel; daughters, Carla Anderson (husband, Jay), Theresa Gabriel of Christiansburg, Va., Jane Gabriel (Sister Margaret Mary) of Brighton, Mich., and Christine Gabriel of Davenport, Fla.; and sons, Bill Gabriel and John Gabriel, both of Davenport. He also is survived by grandchildren, Charles and Sean Jones, Cara and Cierra Anderson, Nicholas Gabriel and Kasey, Gregory, Emily and Timothy Gabriel, of whom he was proud of. Carl was an only child but is survived by nine sisters-in-law and five brothers-in-law and many nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
Mr. Gabriel was a faithful member of St. Mary’s Star of the Sea Church and Divine Mercy Perpetual Adoration Chapel in Key West and Queen of Peace Catholic Community in Gainesville.
A funeral Mass will be celebrated at 2 p.m. Wednesday, June 4, 2008, at Queen of Peace Catholic Church in Gainesville.
