SPRINGFIELD – Carl David Sprouse, 78, of Springfield passed away at 4:44 p.m. Friday, June 27, 2008, at his home following a courageous battle with cancer, with his wife Jennie, and stepgrandson, Bryan Moscardelli, by his side.
He was born July 7, 1929, in Springfield, the son of David Arthur Sprouse and Leola Huddleston. Carl married Geraldine Jennie Hess on Nov. 14, 1953, in Springfield at the Third Presbyterian Church. They celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary in 2003.
He served in the U.S. Army from 1951 to 1953, and was stationed in Germany.
Carl retired from the Illinois Department of Corrections and Teamsters Local 916. He was previously employed by Pillsbury, Keebler Food Co. and Farm Supply. He was a member of Local 916 for 55 years.
His love of motorcycles began when he was 17 years old. He raced professionally and won the 1954 Michigan Mile.
Carl enjoyed riding his motorcycle and traveling with his wife. He was very active with Boyz from Illinois. He also was a member of VFW Post 10302, Springfield, Ansar Shrine Center, Springfield, a member of Riverton-Lavely Masonic Lodge 786, Riverton, Fraternal Order of Eagles Aerie 437, Illinois Sheriff’s Association, ABATE and AARP. Carl also enjoyed spending time with his friends and family.
Carl is survived by his wife, Geraldine Jennie Sprouse; special friends, Bryan Moscardelli, who Carl lovingly referred to as his stepgrandson; and his wife, Linda.
Visitation will be held Monday, June 30, 2008, from 5 to 7 p.m. at Staab Funeral Home. Funeral services will be held Tuesday, July 1, 2008, at 11 a.m. at Staab Funeral Home including Masonic services. Burial will be held at Oak Ridge Cemetery following services.
