SPRINGFIELD – Betty L. Coates-Sprouse, 85, a resident of Springfield since 1944, died at 8:30 a.m. Monday, Feb. 9, 2009, at St. John’s Hospice.
She was born April 9, 1923, in New City, the daughter of Ira and Beryl King Jones. She married J.P. Coates; he preceded her in death in 1977. She married Charles Mel Sprouse in 1980; he preceded her in death May 22, 2001.
Also preceding her in death were her parents; three brothers, Chick, John and Ray Jones; and a sister, Mary Fortner.
Mrs. Coates-Sprouse worked at Horace Mann Insurance Co. for 20 years and Lloyds & Fink’s Cleaners.
She was of the Christian faith. She enjoyed traveling in the motor home with her husband, Mel.
Surviving are four daughters, Judy Cockayne of Springfield, Paula Caveny of Edwardsville, Sandy Davis of Springfield and Peggy (husband, Dan) Cullen of Auburn; a son, Jess Coates Jr. of Marshall, Ark.; 11 grandchildren; several great-grandchildren; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.
Visitation will be held from 4 until time of services at 6 p.m. Friday, Feb. 13, 2009, at Staab Funeral Home, with Vaughn Beeman officiating. Graveside services will be at 10 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 14, 2009, at Rochester Cemetery.
Memorials may be made to the Alzheimer’s Association.
