SPRINGFIELD – Betty L. Berndt, 70, of Springfield died at 1:46 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 23, 2008, at her home. She was born Feb. 9, 1938, in Thomasville, the daughter of Woodrow and Ruby Sanders Vollintine. She married Jesse E. Berndt on Aug. 27, 1955; he preceded her in death in 2002.
She is preceded in death by her parents and husband.
She is survived by three daughters, Kathryn VonWerder of Oklahoma City, Penny (Ronald) Schuecking and Gail (Jim) Engel, both of Athens; four sons, Michael Berndt of Springfield, Steven (Kelly) Berndt of Athens, Rick (companion, Mary) Berndt of Petersburg and Jerry Berndt of Springfield; 14 grandchildren; several great-grandchildren; three sisters, Gladys Alley of Riverton, Wyo., Lucile (Tom) West of Springfield and Debra (Randy) Bluhme of Florida; two brothers, Kenneth (Shirley) Vollintine of Yorkville and Raymond Vollintine of Springfield; several aunts and uncles; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.
She was a resident of Springfield since 1989.
She worked as a nursing assistant for 17 years at St. John’s Hospital, retiring in 1995.
She was a member of Elm Street Christian Church.
A memorial gathering will be held from 5 to 7 p.m. Friday, Sept. 26, 2008, at Staab Funeral Home. Burial will be at Camp Butler National Cemetery.
Memorials may be made to Cass-Schuyler Area Hospice in Virginia.
