Betty Joann Rutkowski, 90, of Springfield, died Wednesday, January 17, 2018 at Memorial Medical Center. She was born April 10, 1927 in Springfield to Willis Boone and Geraldine Hoagland. She married John Rutkowski in 1957 and he preceded her in death on April 29, 2010.

Betty was also preceded in death by her parents; adoptive father, Tom Johnson; two sisters, Nancy Lounsberry and Joyce Doyen; and one brother, Tommy Johnson.

Survivors include two daughters, Gena (Ralph) Berwanger of Springfield, and Brenda (Will) Sternitzke of Springfield; three grandchildren, Elijah Berwanger and Hanna and Holly Sternitzke and several nieces and nephews.

She grew up in Petersburg, moving to Springfield after high school. Soon after she worked for Franklin Life Insurance Company and the State of Illinois as a secretary.

Betty was a member of Prairie State Polish Club. She raised her family at Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church and later went back to her home church, 1st Presbyterian Church. She loved crafting, gardening, music and poetry.

Visitation: 5 – 7 pm Sunday, January 21, 2018 at Staab Funeral Home – Springfield.

Funeral Service: 10:30 am Monday, January 22, 2018 at Staab Funeral Home- Springfield with Pastor Brian Wilmarth officiating. Burial will follow at Oak Ridge Cemetery.
