Betty J. Gillespie, 85, of Springfield, died at 9:26 am, Monday, March 7, 2016 at Lewis Memorial Christian Village. She was born on March 15, 1930 in Freeport, IL to Clarence and Byrness Ross. She married James A. Gillespie on February 2, 1952 and he preceded her in death on June 12, 1999. Also preceding her in death were her parents, grandson, Christopher Skube and two brothers, Paul and Don Ross.

Surviving are three daughters, Kathy (Michael) Ascher, Terry (Michael) Blasko and Jean (Mark) Skube, all of Springfield; son, Michael (Linda) Gillespie of Springfield; five grandchildren, Jennie Ascher, Tim (Kate) Ascher, Megan (Eric) Leichsenring, Nicole Blasko and Stephen Skube; six great grandchildren, Skyler, Brady, Adalie, Madison, Will and Amelia and several nieces and nephews.

Betty was a resident of Springfield since 1956 and retired from Horace Mann in 1992. She was a member of St. Cabrini Church, Beta Sigma Phi Sorority and the Laurel United Methodist Church Book Club. Betty was very crafty. She enjoyed sewing, woodworking and most especially make beautiful greeting cards. She was an avid Cubs fan by marriage.

Visitation: 4 – 7 pm Thursday, March 10, 2016 at Staab Funeral Home. A prayer service will be held at 4:00 pm.

Funeral Mass: 10:00 am, Friday, March 11, 2016 at St. Cabrini Church with Monsignor John Ossola officiating. Burial will follow at Calvary Cemetery.
