SPRINGFIELD – Betty C. McAlexander, 84,
of Springfield died at 8:52 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 5, 2008, at St. John’s Hospice.
She was born April 18, 1924, in northern Illinois, the daughter of Harold and Lena Cross Havenar. She married James R. McAlexander Sr. on May 7, 1943, and he survives.
She was preceded in death by her parents; a brother, William Havenar; and two grandchildren.
Mrs. McAlexander, a lifelong resident of Springfield, was a homemaker and had worked for Bressmers for four years and Blalocks for three years.
She graduated from Sacred Heart Academy, where she was valedictorian. She was a member of St. John’s Lutheran Church, where she helped teach Sunday School and was a member of the choir. She was past president of the PTA and served with the women’s auxiliary for the Marine Corps League.
Surviving are a daughter, Jayne McAlexander of Denver; two sons, James R. (wife, Avis) McAlexander Jr. and Dean McAlexander, both of Springfield; three grandchildren, Jason, Kris and Jayne Ann McAlexander; four great-grandchildren; a brother, Harold Havenar Jr. of Riverton; and several
nieces, nephews and cousins.
Visitation will be from 9 a.m. until time of services at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, Nov. 8, 2008, at St. John’s Lutheran Church, with the Rev. Paul Olson officiating.
Committal service will be held in the Oak Ridge Chapel with burial to follow in Oak Ridge Cemetery.
