SPRINGFIELD ” Barbara Rutherford, 74, passed away on Wednesday, April 16, 2008 at St. John’s Hospital, after a long illness.
Born in Belleville, IL on May 6, 1933, she was the daughter of Aloysius and Aurelia (Reis) Stenger. She was a graduate of Sacred Heart Academy, and earned an Associates degree from Springfield College and a Bachelor of Arts degree from Sangamon State College.
A resident of Springfield for over forty years, she served as the Assistant Commissioner for Pat Ward in the Department of Health and Safety of the City of Springfield for sixteen years. She worked on the Sacred Heart Academy alumni association for many years and was the cofounder of Springfield Divorced and Separated Catholics. She was also an avid bridge player and reader.
Survivors include her children, Cathy Walker (Todd) of Wells, VT, Mark Rutherford (Mary) of St. Paul, Minnesota, Joan Rutherford of Bel Air, Maryland, and Paula Rutherford of Austin, Texas; six grandchildren and two foster grandchildren; her siblings, Mary Elizabeth Stenger of Springfield, Joseph Stenger of Richmond, Virginia; and several nieces and nephews.
She was predeceased by her parents; a brother, Aloysius Stenger, and a sister, Margaret Stenger.
Calling hours will be from 5 to 7 pm on Friday April 18, 2008 at the Staab Funeral Home, 1109 South 5th Street, Springfield. The funeral service will be 10 am on Saturday, April 19, 2008 at St. Agnes Church, Springfield, Reverend Robert Jallas officiating, with burial immediately following at Calvary Cemetery. A reception will follow from noon-2:00 pm at Mariah’s Restaurant, 3317 Robbins Road, Springfield.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to St. Vincent de Paul Society or the Alzheimer’s Association.
